Agate is usually found alongside numerous other types of rock, but it is primarily classified as volcanic rock. Agates frequently form within pockets of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock such as granite, melaphyre and porphyry. Deposits of silicon dioxide typically form in almond or ball-shaped nodules and as the deposits continue to build over long periods of time, parallel bands are created through the process. Banded specimens are referred to as agate, while uniform and blended species are classified as chalcedony, carnelian, moss agate or other specific trade names.

Agate stones available on the market today, originate from deposits all over the world including Myanmar, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Botswana, India, Australia and the USA.

Agate gemstones are one of the oldest stones in recorded history. Agate is known as a stone of protection, protecting one from nightmares, stress and fatigue. Since biblical times, agates have been worn and used in jewelry to protect against imminent storms. They were highly valued as talismans and amulet throughout ancient times.

Agate has the ability to quench thirst and protect from fevers. Alternative healers will place agate stone on the solar plexus to alleviate stomach illnesses. Agate is a stone of strength and gives the power to move forward and carry on through tough times.

Agate occurs in wide range of colors and patterns. Although some colors occur more commonly than others, almost all agate will be multicolored due to unique banding. Single-colored agates can occur naturally, but most of the stones available today have been dyed to obtain unicolor. Single-colored agates are often traded using specific trade names, such as sard and carnelian. Agate colors can include black, white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, pink, purple and gray.

Stichtite was first discovered in 1910 in Western Tasmania, Australia by A.S. Wesley, a former chief chemist with the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. The stone was later named after Robert Carl Sticht the manager of the mine.

Colombia is home to the largest source of emeralds worldwide.
Colombian emerald deposits, which yield a finer variety than other emerald mine, formed between 40 and 65 million years ago. While deposits in several locations around the globe ensure supply, the Colombian variety grabs the top position for transparency, crystallization and fire.
Emerald is a crystal from the beryl family of minerals and typically received its classic green coloring from trace amounts of chromium or vanadium in the stone.

Aquamarine (Lat. aqua marinā, "water of the sea") is a gemstone-quality transparent variety of beryl, having a delicate blue or turquoise color, suggestive of the tint of seawater. It's closely related to the gem emerald. Colors vary and yellow beryl, called Heliodor; rose pink beryl, Morganite; and white beryl, goshenite are known.
Aquamarine is a beryl with a hexagonal crystal structure and a chemical formula of Be3Al2Si6O18, a beryllium aluminium silicate mineral. It has a specific gravity of 2.68 to 2.74 and a Mohs hardness of from 7.5 to 8. Aquamarine typically is on the low end of the specific gravity range, normally at less than 2.7. The pink variety exhibits a high specific gravity of around 2.8. Refractive indices range around 1.57 to 1.58.
It occurs at most localities which yield ordinary beryl, some of the finest coming from Russia. The gem-gravel placer deposits of Sri Lanka contain aquamarine. Clear yellow beryl, such as occurs in Brazil, is sometimes called aquamarine chrysolite. When corundum presents the bluish tint of typical aquamarine, it is often termed Oriental aquamarine.
In the United States, aquamarines can be found at the summit of Mt. Antero in the Sawatch Range in central Colorado. In Brazil, there are mines in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Bahia. Zambia also produces nice aquamarine as well as Madagascar, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya. Much of today's aquamarine is heated to give it a better color blue. The deeper the blue color, the more valuable the gem is considered.
The biggest aquamarine ever mined was found at the city of Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter.
Aquamarine is the official state gem of Colorado.
Aquamarine (along with Bloodstone) is the birthstone associated with March. It is also the gemstone for the 19th Anniversary.
People in the Middle Ages thought that aquamarine could magically overcome the effects of poison.
Ancient sailors traveled with aquamarine crystals, believing that it would ensure a safe passage, and often slept with the stones under their pillow to ensure sound sleep. They believed the siren’s (mermaid) fish-like lower body was made of aquamarine.
