Apatite is a common mineral, gem-quality apatite is quite rare. Apatite is known by gemstone connoisseurs especially for two colors; the Paraiba-like blue-green, and the leek-green color that once earned apatite the name 'asparagus stone.' There is also a very rare deep purple apatite, found in the aptly named Mount Apatite in Maine, USA.

Gem-quality apatite is found in a number of places in the world, including Burma, Brazil and Mexico. The neon blue-green material is found chiefly in Madagascar. When evaluating an apatite gem, color saturation is very important, since the more intense the color, the most valuable the gem. Stones over one carat are rare and will command higher prices in the market. It is unusual to find clean apatite; most pieces have at least some inclusions.

Mocha Zircon

Zircon is known since the Middle Ages. The oldest known zircon stones are from Western Australia, with an age of 4.4 billion years. The name probably comes from the Persian word "zargun" which means "gold-colored", though zircon comes in a wide range of different colors. The most popular zircon color is blue. Most blue zircon come in a pastel blue, but some exceptional gems have a bright blue color. Zircon is also available colorless, green, dark red, violet, yellow, brown and orange.

Due to its high refractive index and strong dispersion, zircon has great brilliance and intensive fire. The luster is vitreous to a brilliant sheen. Colorless stones are brilliant cut. They have fraudulently been offered for "matura"diamond. On the other hand, natural zircon should not be confused with synthetic cubic zirconia, a common diamond look-alike.

Colored stones get a brilliant or step (emerald) cut. Round stones are often given a "zircon" cut which is similar to a standard round brilliant cut with an extra row of facets at the edges.

Although relatively hard, (rating 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs scale), zircon is brittle and therefore sensitive to knocks and pressure. The gem has the tendency to wear along facet edges. Its use in rings should therefore be limited to protective settings or occasional wear jewelry. Zircon jewelry should be stored carefully, wrapped in individual twists of paper so that it will not knock against each other.

Belgian Teal Fluorite

Many countries are rich in fluorite, including Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Namibia, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and the United States. However, the Blue Fluorite is found in limited locations only. The best quality comes from Afghanistan and Belgium from where we have sourced all our teal fluorites.
Fluorite deposits are found in many locations around the world.
The unique variety of 'chlorophane fluorite' is found in very limited quantities at Amelia Court House, Virginia; Franklin, New Jersey; the Bluebird Mine in Arizona, USA; Gilgit, Pakistan; Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada and at Nerchinsk in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
A purple-blue and white banded variety of fluorite known as 'Blue John' is mined from Castleton in Derbyshire, England. Only a very small quantity of Blue John is mined each year for gemstone and ornamental use.
China has recently become a source for a type of fluorite that has similar color and banding to 'Blue John' fluorite.

Seaside Quarts

Quartz is found in many countries and many geologic environments. Major producers of natural quartz crystals are the United States (particularly Arkansas) and Brazil. Natural quartz is rarely used as found in nature (especially in electrical applications), except as a gemstone. Natural quartz crystals have too many chemical impurities and physical flaws. As a result, a commercial process of manufacturing pure, flawless, electronics-grade quartz was developed. “Cultured quartz,” that is, quartz crystals grown very carefully in highly controlled laboratory conditions, is the quartz that is used in industry. About 200 metric tons of cultured quartz is produced each year. In the production of cultured quartz crystals, a “seed crystal” is needed. A seed crystal is a small piece of carefully selected, non-electronics-grade quartz. The manufactured crystal grows on this seed crystal. Seed crystals of quartz are called lascas. The United States is 100% dependent on imported lascas for manufactured quartz crystals. The major sources for lascas are Canada, Brazil, Germany and Madagascar. China, South Africa and Venezuela are other reported producers of quartz lascas.

What is Natural Vesuvianite?

Vesuvianite is named after Mt. Vesuvius in Italy, the famous volcano where it was originally described. The term Idocrase is an older synonym not commonly used anymore; it is more readily seen in old collection labels and classical reference guides. Although many habits of Vesuvianite are dull and uninteresting, there are some highly lustrous and brilliantly-colored forms of this mineral that are outstanding. Especially of note are the vividly-colored and multicolored varieties that came from the Jeffery Quarry in Asbestos, Quebec, which are stunning and classic forms of this mineral.

Brown, green, yellow. Less commonly pink, purple, orange, maroon, red, and blue. Multicolored shades of green or pink/purple and green are rare.

In the U.S., Vesuvianite is well-known at Crestmore, Riverside Co., California. The compact variety Californite comes from Pulga, Butte Co., California. Well-crystallized crystals come from Magnet Cove, Hot Spring Co., Arkansas; and brightly colored, lustrous crystals from the Belvidere Mountain quarries, Lowell/Eden, Orleans & Lamoille Cos., Vermont. Brown Vesuvianite comes from Joppa Hill, Amherst, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire; and excellent dark crystals come from Maine at Sanford, York Co.; and at Casco, Cumberland Co.

The blue variety Cyprine comes from Franklin, Sussex Co., New Jersey; and from Øvstebø, Sauland, Telemark, Norway. Wiluite is described from the Vilyui River Basin, Yakutia, Russia.

Norwegin Thulite

Thulite is the translucent to opaque pink variety of zoisite, which is often mottled or streaked with gray or white quartz. The name thulite is derived from its discovery location, Norway, which was once called Thule. This gem is also called rosaline.

On Østre Brandsfjell in Lierne, at the border of Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park, there is one of Norway’s largest deposits of the mineral Thulite. In order to reach the deposits it takes a 7 kilometer long trek through bogs and mountain terrain.

It is named after the mythical region of Thule, which many identify with Norway. The color of Thulite is caused by the element manganese in its composition. Thulite often occurs associated with Quartz, and is sometimes mottled with streaks or spots of white Quartz.
